Getting started
markbird is a Markdown editor that runs in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account to create — open app.markbird.md and start typing.
Your first document
The editor opens with a document ready. Type on the left, see it rendered on the right. Everything you write is saved to your browser as you go; there is no "save" button to remember, and reloading the page brings back exactly where you were, down to the cursor position.
To start another document, press ⌘/Ctrl + N or use the sidebar. Documents live
in the library on the left, which you can toggle with ⌘/Ctrl + \.
Installing it as an app
markbird is a Progressive Web App, which means your browser can install it like a native application — its own window, its own icon, no address bar.
| Browser | How |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge | Install icon in the address bar, or menu → Install markbird |
| Safari (macOS) | File → Add to Dock |
| Safari (iOS) | Share → Add to Home Screen |
| Firefox (Android) | Menu → Install |
Installing also registers markbird as a handler for .md, .markdown and
.txt files, so "Open with" in your file manager will offer it.
Once installed, it works with no connection at all. See Offline & installation for what exactly works offline.
Do I need an account?
No. markbird works fully without one, and anonymous documents never leave your device. You only need to sign in if you want your documents on more than one device, or want to share an editable link.
Read Privacy & data for exactly what is stored where.
